About the Market Town of Malton

The popular market town of Malton is an all year round travel destination and home to two hotels in the English Rose portfolio.

Historic Malton offers many hotels, bed & breakfasts, cafe bars and restaurants for holiday makers to enjoy. This quaint market town is the ideal base for visitors to discover Yorkshire and has good bus and rail links to the coast and York, from where it is only 2-hours by rail to London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Any walk around Malton soon arrives at the Market Place where stands the Green Man. A traditional street market is held every Saturday, a popular treat for visitors to hotels in Malton. At other times Market Place, opposite The Green Man Family Inn, acts as a “pay-and-display” car park.

In one corner, the old Town Hall building now houses Malton Museum, which proves a popular attraction with visitors to The Talbot and Green Man, and opposite it on Saville Street is the Tourist Information office.

The Talbot Hotel stands on the River Derwent, which joins Malton and the village of Norton. The two small towns are really one but local residents have a keen sense of locality and insist they come from either Malton or Norton. Much building and development has taken place in the last 100 years, mostly residential, but some old shops and houses in the town centre have been demolished for new development.

Malton was bypassed in the eighties, and the loss of through traffic had an instant and beneficial effect on the small market town hotels. The new road has allowed Malton to keep its feel as a historic market town and popular Yorkshire holiday destination.
