Museum’s new £1m development

26th Mar 2009

Guests staying at our Malton hotels are now a step closer to being able to visit the Harrison Collection which is a priceless collection of 10,000 social history artefacts collected by local brothers Edward and Richard Harrison over the last 50 years.

Charlie Kitch, the architect and agent for the museum, said:

“It has been described as one of the most significant social history collections to come into the public domain in the last 30 years.”

Planners have given the green light to a £1 million home for the unique collection of memorabilia at the Ryedale Folk Museum and members of the North York Moors National Park’s planning committee were told by chief planning officer Val Dilcock that the ambitious project at the Hutton-le-Hole local attraction, near our Malton hotels, is now a step closer.

The Lottery fund had already awarded the Rydale Folk Museum £97,500 to develop its plans to buy The Barn, a Hotel next door to the museum, in order to create the new exhibition and purpose built learning centre.

A parish meeting was held in Hutton-le-Hole and gave almost unanimous support to the development. The overall view was that the addition to the local attraction would provide a vital role in village life, improve links with local schools, attract more tourists to Yorkshire and Ryedale and provide further employment for the local community.

While the development will involve putting up a relatively over-sized building in the conservation area, it is considered that in view it would not appear overly prominent. Many of the local community feel that the new venture really is a “high quality, contemporary designed” scheme.

The family attraction is hosting an exhibition of items from the Harrison Collection until the end of March, so if you are staying at our accommodation near York during this period you will be able to enjoy a historic day out at the Rydale Folk Museum and view the artefacts from the collection.
